Founded in 1959, St Anne’s Nursing Home (SANH) has grown into one of the most trusted healthcare providers serving the Marawila and Puttalam regions of Sri Lanka. The hospital was established by His Lordship Rt Rev. Dr Edmund Peiris, the first Bishop of Chilaw, together with the Salvatorian Sisters, and began as a small 10-bed maternity ward dedicated to serving the community.
Over the decades, St Anne’s Nursing Home has developed into a respected private healthcare institution, providing compassionate and patient-centred medical services to thousands of families.

History & Background
Founded in 1959, St. Anne’s Nursing Home (SANH) began as a small 10-bed maternity ward with a vision to provide compassionate healthcare to the community. The hospital was established by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Edmund Peiris, the first Bishop of the Chilaw, together with the Salvatorian Sisters.
The first baby delivery took place in June 1959, marking the beginning of a healthcare mission rooted in faith, compassion, and service to the people of the region.
Over the decades, St. Anne’s Nursing Home has grown steadily under the spiritual and administrative guidance of church leadership and dedicated healthcare professionals. With the guidance of Rt. Rev. Dr. Frank Marcus Fernando and Rt. Rev. Dr. Valence Mendis, the institution continued to expand its services and strengthen its role in providing quality medical care.
Today, under the leadership of His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Don Wimal Siri Jayasuriya, St. Anne’s Nursing Home continues its mission of providing compassionate, high-quality healthcare to the community.
- Treated over 100,000 inpatients to date.
- Celebrated its 50th Jubilee in 2009.
- Became the first private hospital in Puttalam District to introduce laparoscopic surgery and investigation services (since 2020).
- Offers direct employment to 100 staff and indirect opportunities for 20 individuals.
